In Criss Cross Applesauce I created miniature clay objects to form imagined scenes from a queer dollhouse. From these objects I created paintings, allowing the line between painting and object to become blurred as the paintings served as shelves to display the miniatures. This act of play portrayed idealized, hyper-feminine spaces and that become interrupted through the introduction of a queer narrative. These narratives are representative of how my female partner and I share space and the objects that exist in pairs act as stand ins for our bodies. I asked of viewers to approach the work with their own experiences and memories of home and domesticity in mind.
The following images depict a collaborative installation between myself and Fort Worth based artist, Max Marshall. This project was included in our two-person MFA Candidacy show, alongside, but separate from, our individual installations. This piece merges our two artistic practices, drawing from our experiences of home, story-telling, collecting, humor, and of course, a mutual love of cheap beer.
